Mirsada Tukulija, pedagogue/psychologist at the “Saburina” Elementary School in Sarajevo, spoke to N1 about how parents should prepare their first-graders for school.
Tukulija has a clear message for parents – relax.
“Children get over it very easily and very quickly, but I mostly advise them to relax,” said Tukulija.
Tukulija has several suggestions for what parents can do, or how to adapt their children to the new environment.
“Prepare them, backpacks, wardrobe, have a little celebration, a little ceremony. Let the children feel that it’s nothing terrible, that it’s a new step in their lives,” Tukulija explained.
Tukulija also explains that parents must prepare for the meeting with the teacher in such a way that she or he is not a strict person.
“The teacher is there to teach you, to help you when you need it,” said Tukulija.
When it comes to children’s problems, Tukulija says that all things should be observed individually.
“If nighttime urination, responsibility, learning, stuttering, something atypical that has not occurred before appears, and if it occurs continuously, then that is a signal for alarm and further observation is carried out,” explained Tukulija.
When asked if there is a recipe for how to prepare parents, Tukulija simply says there is none.
