The most common hair care mistakes: Here’s why your hair becomes dry, brittle and dull

Although we think we’re doing our hair a favor by washing, styling, and using various products, we often unknowingly make mistakes that damage it in the long run. Washing it too often, using the wrong products, or neglecting the scalp are just some of the habits that can make hair lifeless and prone to breakage.

If you want healthy, shiny, and well-groomed hair, it’s important to know what you’re doing wrong and how to adjust your routine.

1. Washing your hair – too often and with too hot water

One of the most common mistakes is washing your hair every day. This strips away the natural oils that nourish your hair, which can lead to dryness and scalp irritation. Experts recommend washing your hair every two to three days, and you can use dry shampoo in between.

Another mistake is using hot water . Instead, wash your hair with lukewarm water, and at the end rinse it with cold water – this closes the cuticle and makes the hair shinier.

2. Incorrect drying and styling

Aggressive rubbing with a towel or using hair dryers, irons and curlers without protection makes hair brittle. Instead:

dry your hair by patting it with a soft towel,

use a hairdryer on medium heat,

always apply a heat protection spray .

3. Brushing the wrong way

Wet hair is the most sensitive, so it should never be brushed aggressively. Instead of regular brushes, use a wide-toothed comb and detangle your hair slowly – from the ends to the roots.

4. Wrong hair products

Many people choose shampoos and conditioners based on advertising, scent, or price, instead of hair type.

Moisturizing preparations for dry hair,

volumizing for thin,

sulfate-free for curly hair.

The wrong products can further weigh down or dry out your hair.

5. Neglecting the scalp

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. A build-up of hairspray, dry shampoo, and dirt can clog pores and slow hair growth. So exfoliate your scalp once a week , and massage it with your fingertips to improve circulation and strengthen follicles.

6. Lack of protection from external factors

Hair is also sensitive to sun, wind, cold and dry air. Use UV hair protection , light hats made of natural materials and make sure that heating does not dry out the hair further.

Quick tips for more beautiful hair

Sleep on silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction.

Apply conditioner only to the lengths and ends, never to the scalp.

Trim your ends regularly every 2–3 months.

Use soft rubber bands without metal and do not tighten your hair too much.

Don’t forget about a diet rich in vitamins and minerals – hair is nourished from the inside as well.
