Many electrical devices continue to draw power even when they are turned off, a phenomenon known as ‘phantom power’. These include televisions, radios, LCD monitors or cordless phones, whose red LEDs indicate that the devices remain on standby.
However, not every device should be completely disconnected from the power supply, as this can cause damage or disrupt their operation. That’s why it’s important to know the order in which devices should be turned off: first turn off the switch, then pull out the plug.
There are three devices that should never be unplugged:
The first is a printer, especially an ink-jet. If the power button is not used, but the plug is simply removed, the printer automatically restarts and starts cleaning the print head, which consumes ink.
The second is a WiFi router . Although it can sometimes be turned off at night, unless other important devices are connected to it, most smart home devices, landlines, and answering machines require the router to be on all the time to work properly.
The third are modern OLED TVs . They perform automatic pixel updates in the background, so unplugging them could cause damage or degradation of image quality.
Because of all the above, it is recommended to carefully manage the shutdown of the device in order to prevent damages and unnecessary costs.
